Episode notes.

On this episode of Nate Versus Nate, the hosts read off clues for Nate to guess the top-grossing holiday gift from each year of the 80s and 90s. The age-old question of how soon can you celebrate Christmas is answered, and Nate goes on a crazy liberal rant about Christmas trees.

0:55

Hello and welcome to Nat One Presents the Podcast.

0:59

Hello, Nate, and hello Chris. Hey Chris. I am back. Welcome back. He's back. He's back. Everybody. And in the air strong. Chris on the show. Yeah. I like it.

1:09

Now, today's a special episode for Nat One Presents because the holidays are coming up.

1:15

That's right. Thanksgiving is over. We can finally talk about holidays and not get, or Christmas specifically, and not get like slammed by people because God forbid you play anything before Thanksgiving. What's your opinion? Uh Christmas. Before or after Thanksgiving, can it exist? Does it have to wait until after Thanksgiving?

1:32

I want it to wait until December, but then So even after Thanksgiving, you want December 1. Yeah, December 1. That sounds reasonable, but in my house with my family, Christmas starts probably around November 25th. Okay. Trees up. All right. We're celebrating. Got it.

1:51

Chris, Christmas the day after Halloween, the day after Thanksgiving, or December 1st.

1:57

I think as long as it's after Thanksgiving, it's all right. You can't really argue against it. I'd be fine if we just didn't celebrate it at all, personally, but you know.

2:06

Totally derailes our birthdays, but that's a whole nother thing next.

2:10

So um Megan's two is right in there.

2:12

Ooh, oh nice, nice. Um, yeah, so my thoughts, not that you guys care, but um no, I I think, yeah, as long as it's after Thanksgiving, I'd be fine with December one, but I tend to I have memories and I tend to actually enjoy putting the tree up like at after Thanksgiving. That usually happens at my house of like, oh, you have the dinner, you all like lay cathartically or like just lethargically on the couch for a couple hours, and then you put the tree up. Like pull yourself together, yeah. Pull yourself together and get that tree out. Yeah, exactly. So that's kind of like why I'm kind of okay specifically with after Thanksgiving. But it makes sense.

2:12

Yeah, but I think we can all agree when you start seeing [expletive] after like Halloween comes down in the stores and then the Christmas stuff goes up, it's like, are you kidding me? Right.

2:54

Come on, but but times have been tough, you know. So if you want to celebrate Christmas early, you go right the [expletive] ahead. You've earned it. You yeah, whatever. Treat yourself, treat yourself right. You want that tree up, put it up.

3:07

What are your thoughts, Nate? Because I know you're real passionate about energy from the green from our green episode. Um real tree versus fake tree, or do you have an opinion there?

3:18

Um, I like the real tree, I really do. The smell is awesome, but really I don't want to have to keep this thing in a thing of water. And if you have pets, a real tree is just a pain in the ass to have. So we've always just had, I think one year we had a real tree and it was a doozy nade, it was a whopping like three feet tall. Wow, and it was huge, you know. But ever since then, we just do fake tree because you put it together, throw it back in the box, dun, dun, done.

3:46

Yeah. Do you have like a pre-lit one or do you like no?

3:49

We do our own lights on.

3:50

I'm so lazy, I have like the lights too. Like I hate the [expletive] lights, dude. Oh man. Chris, what do you do for trees? Do you have any any preference for no tree? Yeah, I don't put up a tree.

4:00

Um, but I used to have uh fake one. Fake ones are just way easier.

4:04

Was it black? No. Oh I picture being black. Would you do like an all-black Christmas tree?

4:09

Yeah. Would you get any like do that and then just make it a holiday tree? Yeah. Yeah. It just doesn't come down. It just stays up. So tonight, like, yeah. Um, yeah, I'm same about uh fake tree all the way. Uh again, a lot of people are like, oh, because you love the environment. Like, actually, uh, it's really just because I'm super lazy. And even the idea. Also, you get bugs sometimes with the real trees, right? I don't like bugs. Um, yeah, I am not a fan. So that's that's kind of it. I did have some guy though at work one day be like, yeah, you think uh fake trees save the environment?

4:09

Like, well, and and then he went on to be maybe correct in that, like, well, fake trees are mostly produced overseas, so when you think about all the emissions created, it actually like buying the trees also support local farmers. So there is maybe uh a very good argument to buy trees locals. So I don't think even like you have to be an extreme environmentalist to like hate on people who do or do not buy Christmas trees. Right. I think like most people don't care that much. Um I'm definitely not one of those like leftist uh Christmas tree people son of a [expletive], Nate.

From 5:00

5:09

Always pushing his agenda on the show.

5:15

Nah, dude. I love Christmas though. To be totally honest, like I'm I'm kind of a cheese ball and uh I I dig it. I get screwed on it because of my birthday, or that's the impression everybody gets. That's a really annoying thing. So I don't mind sharing my birthday or like whatever. Everybody's gonna steal my information anyway. I have a December 24th birthday. Whoa. So anytime I like share my ID, people are like, Wow, Christmas Eve. They go, Wow, Christmas Eve, bet you only got no get like literally that's the cadence every single time. And that's not just like so, Chris, you can probably attest any that's really anybody within probably 10 days plus or minus of Christmas, anyway.

5:15

Um, but to me, like over the years, I've really gone from like, yeah, it sucks as a kid to being like, that's such a [expletive] thing to say. Like, honestly, every time somebody sees my birthday, they're like, Bet you cared more about gifts and you didn't get as many as you wanted. Like, that's kind of like what they're saying to me. I'm like, [expletive] you. So what I've started to tell people is like, oh well, at least all my family's together on Christmas. And whether or not that's even true, I just do it to stick it to them. It's like, [expletive] you guys. Like, my birthday is not [expletive]. You can't just judge me based on a date on a card, even though that's usually why they're checking my age.

6:17

I thought you'd be something like, it doesn't even matter if I've been naughty, I'm still getting a gift.

6:24

That's a great way to get kicked out of wherever I was trying to get into. The library.

6:32

Oh man. So holidays, do you have a like a favorite like memory of a present that you've gotten? Like ever?

6:42

Um, yeah, it's kind of hard. I'm sure I do. Like each year I just felt like it topped and erased the previous year. But one that definitely sticks out to me is my mom got me a Game Boy before I really understood what the [expletive] a Game Boy was. So um, but yeah, uh, I'd say that's like the big one.

7:02

Chris? Uh I remember one year. Don't remember where I was. Remember it was a big house, but I remember got the uh PlayStation 1, and I got that like one of the really rainbow-colored demo discs with it, which was really fun.

7:16

Didn't that have like croc and some other [expletive] on it?

7:18

Uh, not the one that I had. It had Crash, it had some downhill skateboarding thing. There was one with like a bunch of like four different colored people inside of a cube and doing something.

7:31

Weird.

7:32

Yeah, it was real strange.

7:33

Because the one I got had uh medieval on it. And then what else did it have? Oh, it had a a solid snake demo on there. And I think there were two other games, but those are the only two I ever played.

7:43

Yeah, medieval. Well, medieval, yeah. But uh yeah, that game was pretty cool back then. Oh, yeah. That was legit. Didn't they kind of remaster it recently? They did. I thought so, yeah. Was it any good? Did anyone play it?

7:54

Yeah, uh I heard it was good and that they made some uh good quality of life changes to make it not as clunky and awkward. Nice.

8:03

I I thought that game was pretty neat. I I almost like I don't have time to go back and replay games like anymore. Like I have to really be into a game now, but like that one has a I don't know. I remember I I think I remember like older family members playing it and being like, that's cool, right?

8:17

Because it was like the first game you got with the demo or whatever.

8:19

It was goofy, right? It wasn't the like classic hero warrior, it was just like this like goofy skeleton guy, right? For Daniel, it was kind of campy before that was like really maybe a thing in video games. I felt like I don't know.

8:30

It was good. I liked it now. What about you, Nate? My favorite memory is that we have a tradition in my house where you get one present Christmas Eve, and then you have to wait until Christmas to get another present. One year, mom was slipping. So she hands me one, she thinks it's a movie, and I open it up and it's a PlayStation game. And I was upset, and I was like, I don't even have a PlayStation. Did you really throw a tantrum at? Yeah, like you couldn't figure it out, right? No, because I was so upset. I'm like How old are you, roughly? I don't remember.

8:30

Mom comment how old I was because I remember us being at my grandma Judy's house, and I got the game, and then I was like, I don't even have a PlayStation. What's the what's the point of this? Why why am I even here? This is garbage. And then I ended up getting a PlayStation out of it.

9:20

So did you have to wait till the next day? I think I did. Like you had to go, you had to go to bed angry and then wake up to a PlayStation. Yeah, that's awesome. Merry Christmas. Yeah. Just prove that Nate has always been over the top and too much.

9:31

All the time. And then uh another fun fact, I am a terrible gift giver. Um, thank goodness that Megan is here because she makes sure that presents are bought accordingly in appropriate time frames. Meanwhile, I wait until Christmas Eve, where I'm like, you know what, maybe I should have bought some gifts. And then Christmas morning comes, and then every year, without a doubt, I'm like, man, I am such a piece of [expletive]. I didn't get anybody anything. Like, look at me sitting here. And that's a vicious cycle. I'll be able to do that.

From 10:00

10:01

So obviously, your wife takes care of like the kids and stuff, but like, do you like at least figure out to get something for your wife? Have you figured that over the years that you at least have to shop for her? No.

10:11

No. Our anniversary was a little bit ago, and I didn't get a gift for that. And I was like, you know, I love you. Like, what can I do? So, in order for me to prove my love, there was a sale on one of the Instagram users that sells jewelry. But the thing was, I had to be on their website at exactly 1 p.m. and order it before everybody else to make sure I got it. And I [expletive] did it. So you're welcome.

10:35

Yikes.

10:36

Yeah, I did it though. I set an alarm and everything. And I got on that boom, boom, boom, bye.

10:41

Maybe just set like a reminder. You can just like on your phone, like, hey, Google, what the [expletive] ever? Like, remind me on three days before blank.

10:48

Like, I could do that.

10:50

Is it the thought of like, do you have trouble thinking of a good gift? Like, I've I've gotten before like gift paralysis where like I don't I don't want to give you a [expletive] gift. Right. I don't believe in that. So, and I mean that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but I tend to not want to do that. And so sometimes I've not gotten gifts for people because I actually don't know what to get them. And I also am not of the mind of like, yeah, I can get you like a gift card. I hate that route if I have to, um, because it's just kind of like, well, then I might as well just give you cash.

10:50

And then if I just love cash, if I were to just hand you cash, like that's cool when you're like a grandparent giving it to a child, but when you're adulting or adult, that's not always like necessarily like the gesture just kind of gone sometimes at the moment. But anyway, the point is I overthink everything, and um, but anyway, uh, do you do you get like do you not you just don't remember to look for gifts, you're not into shopping for gifts, or you have trouble, and that's discourages you from shopping.

11:42

It's a combination of I hate shopping for gifts, I hate anywhere I have to go shopping, and then I am such a procrastinator that in my head, for some reason, I'm like, you have plenty of time. Yeah, you have plenty of time in the beginning, right? When you're like in advance, and I will tell myself I have plenty of time all the way up until five minutes till midnight, and I'm like, oh [expletive], I'm out of time. Yeah. Got it, got it.

12:07

Well, uh, Nate, I just always you can always change. Nope, too late. I'm set in my ways. Christmas is not for another uh that's not even Thanksgiving yet. Yep, we're [expletive] up this could be all the time.

12:19

All the presents are still on ship containers in the sea right now. We can't get them in, Nate. No Christmas this year.

12:29

So I think what we're leaning towards, guys, is uh today's a holiday episode, right? Yeah. Thanksgiving occurred. We can safely talk about it. And I want to do a little uh Nate versus Nate trivia. It's really more Chris versus Nate. Um we wanted to see. Um I had this like weird thought of like, I wonder, like, like, can you think of like one toy growing up where you're like, this was the hottest toy for every like everybody had to get this toy for Christmas? Like, can you think?

12:56

Because they're basically every year, there is usually like I know definitely for my sister, Furby was a big one for her. There was a year for that, yeah. And then we were we had the console wars all the time, but if console, if we're talking actual toy and not game consoles, then I think I wanted to say like no, it includes consoles, though at least the list I pulled included consoles.

13:16

And so you're right. So Furby was 1998 was top top year for that.

13:22

I [expletive] hated that thing.

13:24

It's creepy, yes, it's creepy. Yeah, it has an H well. No, um, so that's basically what we did, Nate, is we pulled a list of basically like year by year, what was the most popular toy. Okay, and I think this is a very manageable list. Okay. Um, how far back year-wise do you want to go?

13:42

Ooh. I'm willing to take a stab in the dark at anything. What what's the furthest you have on there? Like 1912 stick and ball?

13:50

The further the oldest on this list goes 1977.

13:53

77. So that's probably gonna be something like Twister or something like that. We can yeah, stick ball.

13:59

Uh we can throw you some like clues. Uh we weren't gonna just be like year, tell us the toy. We were gonna give you some clues, but okay. You want to go all the way back?

14:06

Yeah, let's go all the way back and have fun with it.

14:08

All right, yeah, we can just uh we can kind of take turns or just kind of whoever's more comfortable, like Chris.

14:13

If you know one of these really well, like you know, or if you have obscure facts, I know weird obscure facts.

14:18

Yeah, okay. So the year is 1977. Um, this is a more broader category. Um, it is like everything to do with almost like a franchise.

14:29

Okay.

14:30

Um, and this these were the most popular toys in 1977. Um very futuristic. Um, futuristic? Think 70s channel. What Star Wars toys, action figures? Correct.

14:43

Yep.

14:43

Yep. 1977, it was all about Star Wars toys. It didn't matter what it was. Um all about Star Wars. Yeah, it was. Uh next one let Chris do because we were talking about it earlier and he brought up an interesting point.

14:55

Yeah.

14:55

So this is 1978? Correct.

14:58

Okay.

14:59

So this is a game. And it's one that has a specific name, but I didn't call it that because it's actually modeled after a like children's game that you play with other people.

From 15:00

15:13

That's actually the best description he's ever given, and I'm including any of the movie pitch episodes he was on.

15:18

Okay, so it's a game. Run it back by me one more time.

15:22

Modeled after a children's game that you play with others. And but this is a standalone toy.

15:29

Yeah. Okay. Of the same, like a similar name.

15:34

It's like I'm for some reason I want to say like shoots and ladders. Nope. You're thinking like board game. Think more like electronic toy. Electronic in 1978? Yes.

15:45

Just think like six triple or six D batteries shoved into the thing.

15:53

And then it's modeled after a children's game. Tell me some children's games you can think of.

15:57

Uh children's games like Foursquare or Tetherball?

16:00

More like simple. Like you play in a classroom with like maybe first, second, third graders.

16:05

Like heads up, seven up. Okay. Yeah. Same around. Same vein. Yeah, what else? What else would you play? Um, like around the world we would play.

16:11

You want to like make sure they're listening. Oh, telephone. No. That makes sense, but no. Oh. Uh you want to give up on this one? Yeah, I think I do want to give up.

16:21

Well, before that, I've got a clue. Okay. Okay. So this has four different things that are the inputs for it.

16:29

It's not Simon Says, is it?

16:32

It is. What?

16:33

It is. For some reason I'm picturing that being way later than 1978. Well, it was the top toy of 1978, yeah.

16:40

Um, the toy is called Simon.

16:42

Yeah.

16:43

I knew it was called, and I remember it being called Simon. Is that what you were called the toy being called, or would you call it something else? Or I always just thought it was Simon Says.

16:51

Yeah, but that's that's also what I thought. Right. Okay. But it makes sense that it's called Simon because you're listening to what it says.

16:57

Yeah. Alright. We got through it, guys. We got through it. If you knew it at home, leave a comment, let us know about it.

17:04

Okay. Uh 1979. My only clue for you will be pet cemetery. Pet cemetery, yeah. Think back to uh our episodes and pet cemetery.

17:17

A kite. A red ball that bounced in the road. No, that was a balloon. Was it a balloon? I think it was a balloon.

17:23

I have another clue if you did it.

17:24

The killed gauge.

17:25

Um mine might be too specific. Okay. Do you remember what the pet cemetery? Alright, do you remember the episode that we did a pet cemetery reference? Yes. It was a PTSD. Yes. What did we say was buried in that pet cemetery? Or I think Chris specifically said what was in that.

17:41

Indian burial ground.

17:42

Yep.

17:43

Um was there something specific?

17:46

It also may be a different episode that was Chris's on, but Chris basically said, Yeah, maybe I'm mixing up our episodes now. Let's go with Chris's clue. I'll explain my logic later.

17:59

Oh, garbage dump. Uh garbage pail kits. Atari? Atari. Atari. Atari.

18:08

So uh where I was trying to go was we made a joke that like pet cemetery, like someone buried an ET Atari car, and that's an Atari game that like nuked the game industry. I definitely kind of made it a stretch, but any other clue, you you would have got an Atari Atari.

18:21

So um was there a specific Atari for that? It was like 2600 or something.

18:25

BCS is oh, I have Atari, BCS. Yep. No idea what that is. I don't know. I don't know.

18:30

Not specifically, at least.

18:31

We're not that big of nerds. Okay. No.

18:33

Not in the hardware. There's 1980.

18:36

Ooh, okay. Now we're talking.

18:37

It is a toy I still see used around by all kinds of people. Um, usually it's used to flex on people, and also they're always quoting their time. Rubik's Cube. Yes. That's correct.

18:51

That was quick.

18:52

Yeah, yeah.

18:52

Just like my Rubik's Cube game. Did you ever solve the Rubik's Cube? No, I've never solved it. I know that there is a proper formula and equation to follow to do it, and I'm just like, [expletive] that. I'm just gonna spin it until I get it. Yeah, never got it.

19:05

I'm gonna be totally honest with you. What a useless bunch of knowledge. Like, I'm sorry. But it's just like I I don't believe our brain maybe has a finite capacity that we know of. But like I just deal it with that. I really do not want to commit my time to learning that, which has, I mean, unless I'm in a DD game and you got so desperate that you made it a Rubik's Cube or something, you know, like like where is that now? How is that knowledge ever going to help me? Right. That's always when people are like, I just got new time.

19:32

I'm like, Congratulations.

19:34

Yeah, like wow. Um, it's cool. I think it I it's a double standard here too. When a little kid does it, I'm like, wow, you're so smart. And when an adult does it, I'm like, you're a piece of [expletive]. Shut the [expletive] up. Lose like no one cares. Go get a real hobby. So like I definitely, like, depending on your age and seeing you do that, I'll absolutely like judge the [expletive] out of you, or be like, oh wow, what a good kid. Like what a smart guy. Or girl. I can see that. Whatever. Whatever. The rule agenda. Always pushing it. Always pushing it. Um, I don't even know what this would have looked like as a toy. This is more again going back in the franchise area. 81. I don't think 81. 81. Yep.

19:34

Okay. Um man, this is gonna be really hard to clue without really just giving it away.

From 20:00

20:16

I don't think we can give you too many clues. I'll give you one probably big one. Okay. And probably leave it at that.

20:21

Okay.

20:22

Think blue.

20:24

Blue.

20:25

Remember, this is a franchise.

20:30

Eiful 65. Not that. Oh. Blue.

20:37

Think 80s.

20:38

80s.

20:39

Blue.

20:39

Blue. And franchise. Franchise.

20:42

Maybe not a big franchise, but one nonetheless.

20:47

There's an evil wizard and a cat.

20:50

Oh. Smurfs. Yeah. Smurfs. Okay.

20:53

Was he a wizard?

20:54

Yeah, it was. Gargamel. Gargamel. He was a wizard, right? Yeah. Or like a sorcerer or something.

20:58

I thought he just wanted to eat him.

21:00

I think he did magic. But was he good at it? I don't like. I don't remember watching Smurfs for this story, right?

21:07

Like he made never watch Smurfs.

21:08

He made Smurfette, so he had to have some. He made Smurfette? Yeah. Holy [expletive]. So he had to have some kind of mystical no moment. Holy, holy goodness. Alright. I watched Snorks. Not Smurfs. Smurfs underwater. Yeah. Pretty much. What? Snorks?

21:24

Tell me about Snorks.

21:25

What is this? They look exactly like a Smurf, but then they have a thing that comes up for like a breathing.

21:30

By the same craters?

21:31

Probably. It was like what, Hasbro? Is that who made all of it? Probably. Whatever. And they were different colors. Yes, they were different colors. Well, that defeats the whole point. Like But they're underwater, Nate.

21:42

Yeah.

21:44

Wow. That made them edgier. All right.

21:47

That's what was playing on Boomerang, so that's what I watched. Yeah, I like Boomerang.

21:50

Chris, I don't know what nineteen eighty two means unless it's like speaking to like a category of things.

21:56

Uh no, I understand what it is.

21:58

Okay.

21:58

This is all you boy. Buddy.

22:01

Alright, so 1982.

22:03

The year is 1982.

22:05

Uh you want to think sports. We're getting into more like toys that are more branded to kids in this big event that's going on.

22:15

So like Olympics.

22:16

Was it an event by then?

22:18

I think so. I thought it came later. Or maybe it wasn't added to the Olympics until recently. Maybe that's more correct.

22:24

So it's an Olympic sport. And we're gearing it towards kids as a toy.

22:29

Well, it's not yet an Olympic sport. It later is an Olympic sport. But at the time it was more just like an event, sports event that they were giving towards children.

22:37

Kind of an underground type thing.

22:39

Oh my god, no, I don't know. The more clues, the more confused I'm getting.

22:43

And it's for a lot of help because this one's gonna be kind of tough. It's three letters, not a word.

22:50

Three letters, not a word. Oh my god. RGB. Almost that was three letters. I'm too far in the future.

22:59

It's it's really broad. So because I think this is confusing because a lot of the toys are like so specific, and then this is like a super broad, there's almost like an aisle of a game store of a toy store.

23:10

Uh yeah, I guess. Uh it has two wheels.

23:16

Mm-hmm.

23:19

So this one might be very tough.

23:23

I I think the way this, like, because I just straight up this off the internet, people. Um I'm just gonna give it to you. So it's BMX. I guess BMX stuff.

23:30

Oh, okay. Like a BMX bike. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

23:34

I guess it literally just says BMX.

23:35

Was that the year rad came out? Because that was that was so hot. We'll have to look that up.

23:39

So hot. So hot right now. That hands. That could be it. Yeah, just I don't know. When I think BMX, I think of a lot of just stuff there, so I think that's kind of vague. I don't know how much they had available in 1982 either. I think it was just that that is a bike. Yeah, like so it they would it is. Helmets, yeah. Yeah, maybe. I don't know if they had those in the 80s. Yeah, they didn't have helmets. Okay. This next one. That's a tough one. Okay. This is all I'm gonna say is one word. Dolls. Barbie. No.

24:08

Uh what year is it?

24:10

1983.

24:12

1983.

24:13

The year's 1983.

24:14

Dolls. It's the 80s, so you're trying to be weird. Um oh my gosh. Does it talk? No. No. Does it pee its pants? No. I know which one you're thinking of. Sadly. Um my god, dolls. Um cabbage patch? Yes.

24:34

Cabbage patch kids. 1983. Scary.

24:38

I remember going into aisles full of those and being weirded out. Yeah. Just like dimly lit toy store, walk into an aisle, and there's just a bunch of babies.

24:45

With their dimples menacingly. It was real weird. I didn't like it. I don't like that either. Chris really knows how to paint a scary image. I'm gonna have nightmares tonight.

24:55

Like, I told you not to go down there.

24:58

Can I interrupt and tell a weird story? Yes, you can. Yeah, so last night, uh last night would have been the first night, sleeping with like the new leg surgery, like airwaves opened up and whatever. So like I'm thinking, like, oh, I'm gonna get great sleep. I'm gonna breathe really well. I I've never, I can never think of doing this in my history. I had, I mean, I had a nightmare, and that's not the that weird part, but I had one of those nightmares that you hear people talk about where they try to scream but they couldn't. Yeah. But in real life, I was definitely so. My husband woke me up because I was like, apparently I was going like, uh, uh, uh, oh my god. Like, I was like trying this.

24:58

I was if you try to imagine like making a scream noise without screaming, yeah, yeah. I was actually making that noise. And he woke me up. And I don't know if you've ever had this because I also sleep talk. And if you wake me up right after I say something while sleep talking or right after making a noise while sleeping, I usually remember. I don't know if this is the case for you, but I definitely one of my favorite all-time lines ever, I lived in uh Los Angeles for a year. Had this random roommate who was doing the same program as me, like the charity program, whatever. And I like rolled over in bed and he was like still awake. And I said, I think I just said clown car. That's it.

24:58

Like it just I but I he said I like rolled over at him and then like almost like looked at him and then said clown car clown car. And then he went, Nate, and I went, yeah. And then when that and when that happened, I remembered that I said it. Right, like I know I [expletive] said it. But then he made up other stories. The rest of the year, then he told me I was like, hey kid, like you ain't going nowhere. He said I said [expletive] like that, which like nah, usually you're just mumbling and not making noise. But clown car 100%. I [expletive] said that because he woke me up and I was like, I just said clown car to that kid.

From 25:00

26:38

Oh man, yeah, because I have like a similar effect where I used to I used to sleep talk a lot, and I remember laying on like Megan's lap, and then I was in my mind talking about a Mazda RX8. Like, how does the rotary engine work? And then I know that I was sleep talking, and then I woke up and she's like, What are you talking about? But I was instantly angry that she was ignoring the conversation we were having in the chat. Like, you're not making this up, like you were actually like I was mad. I'm like, Were you not listening? Like, don't judge me.

26:38

Like, I you're almost ashamed that they're like peeking into your dream, but at the same time, like, why the [expletive] weren't you paying attention to my dream in my dream? You know, so like I was mad.

27:22

God bless me again. Like this episode, especially, I am feeling for her.

27:26

Her birthday's coming up.

27:28

Yeah, make it count. You're out of time. I imagine you're already out of time. Oh, I should get her a gift. All right. Yeah, smart. Yeah, it's 1984. Um 84 now. This is gonna be a tough one, too. Okay.

27:41

Um I don't think so. This one is very popular, but it's still somewhat popular now.

27:47

Ooh, okay, okay.

27:48

It's another franchise.

27:50

This is from a documentary that I actually referenced in another episode of the show way back when The Things That Made Us. Yep. And I mentioned how basically we gave G.I. Joes after World War II to like Japan for some reason. They were trying to use them and make them into other toys. They stripped them and made them like kind of like cyborgs, and then they sold them back to us kind of as like then they combined other, like then they combined multiple cyborgs, and eventually we got this toy that they sold back to us. And it's kind of funny because it was like a toy we sold to them.

28:21

Transformers?

28:21

Yes. Do you do listen, Nate? Yeah, sometimes like it. It's because I said cyborg, wasn't it? Maybe. Yeah.

28:29

The machines.

28:30

I don't know how many times I have to tell you people. Rise of the machines. Rise of the machines. That was neat. There's again, I don't know how I would describe Transformers without literally basically telling you it was Transformers.

28:39

And franchise is always good. Because that means it's still going strong. What's your favorite transformer? Ooh. Megatron?

28:47

Is it? Yeah.

28:48

Marriage.

28:49

Can you do like a Megatron voice? No. Try it.

28:51

I can't do it. I can't do it. I can't do it. Because you when you put me on the spot, then I can't do it. Just like in the [expletive] roleplay for one episode. I can't do anything.

28:59

I smoke anything. You smirk. No, you know what it was? I was gonna laugh because it was a little goofy. Sound like Vinny. But I was trying not to make eye contact because I know you're so sensitive. And if you saw, I thought it was funny, and that's exactly what happened. Like, even just thinking about that process, you saw that I was thinking it was funny, then you like felt ashamed of it. I did. I did. Well, so kind of similarly, I like Starscream just because he sounds like such a whiny [expletive]. I'd be like, no. Like everything is very dramatic with him. He was like, probably like if there was a gay transformer, it was probably Starscream. You think so? I would that would be my guess. Yeah, totally. Left agenda.

28:59

Um always push him. Next one, 1985.

29:36

Okay, the year's 1985.

29:37

I remember a lot of movies. I did see this growing up, and I remember there being movies. Um, color coding was big here. Um, a lot of like identification and iconography going on here.

29:50

This was also a TV show that had a theme song that really got stuck in people's heads. Really got stuck.

29:57

Yeah. 1985.

From 30:00

30:04

Yeah, sorry. Okay.

30:06

Man, so the theme is colors. Yeah. It was a TV show. Yeah. Oh man. Mom, help me out. No, she's not there. Not there. Oh. I'm gonna have to pass on this one. I don't we told you bears. Beats. Battlestar Galactica.

30:27

What?

30:28

I just said bears. Beats. Battlestaka. Okay. Is that a thing? You never watched The Office? No.

30:35

Oh. Okay. That's not true. Other people would get it. Oh wow. Okay. Whatever. Um Bears in space. Color. Iconography.

30:44

Oh, care bears. Yeah. Care Bears. I have one.

30:47

I literally say I like said half of the word. And then you're like, beats. Battlestar Galactica. I have to watch that [expletive] video.

30:53

I'll show it to you. Identity theft's a real crime.

30:57

I don't remember much about Care Bears, but I like them. There was a blue one, and he was like mopey. And I was kind of into that guy. I did not watch Care Bears at all. What I thought was cooler was there was gummy bears bouncing here and there and everywhere. I was all about the gummy bears because that was just way cooler. Like some of the care bears had like lame things on their stomach and then like no powers really. But the gummy bears could bounce here, there, and everywhere.

31:22

I had a care bear. Did you? Yeah.

31:24

Which one?

31:24

I don't want to tell you. Give me the color. It's embarrassing. Give me the color. No, I don't want to tell you. Give me the color. It's pink. He had a little heart nose and he had a rainbow on his tongue. Aww. That was my care bear. That's it. Everybody had that phase. I cut his hair. It wasn't good. It didn't grow.

31:45

All right, moving on. I don't know what number 196 is. These ones really tough. Oh we looked at this though, didn't we?

31:52

Yeah. So this one I've never heard of like myself, but I've heard British people talk about it quite a bit.

32:01

British people.

32:01

So the biggest hint I can give you, and then that's it because we really didn't understand it. Um it was kind of before um Build-A-Bear. It was like a very early on predecessor to be.

32:12

Paddington Bear?

32:14

It's the only other bear I know. Build a bear.

32:17

I feel like you might not know this because this one both threw me. Okay, I was looking at those. Yeah, what are we thinking? Have you heard of Teddy Ruxpin?

32:24

Yes, Teddy Ruxpin? Yeah. Really?

32:27

So yeah, we no, we had we had no I did not have a teddy rux spin, Chris. Did you have one?

32:31

Because he had the little heart in his hand, right? And you pushed it and he talked.

32:34

I guess. Well that yeah, because basically, I guess you had like basically a cassette player that you could like had stories on it. And here was the weird part. It said that the eyes would move with the stories. That sounds creepy as [expletive]. No, I don't remember teddy rux spin at all, right?

32:48

You but you did you have one of those? No, I did not have one of those. That was a little too highbrow. Yeah. All right. For us, I got a care bearer with cut hair. The pink one above.

32:56

That's when your brain's news, I think.

32:57

Yeah, I probably got it on sale.

33:01

Um next one.

33:03

This one would be a hard one to describe.

33:05

Yeah, without totally giving it away. Okay. Um try to give me something. It's one of those like gadgety toys. Right. There's toys that just like yes.

33:13

Yes, I think so.

33:14

Yeah. Uh 87, sorry. 87, okay. Yeah, it's one of those toys that just like, I don't know. Slinky. You're thinking in the right realm.

33:25

You're in the right realm of like, this was a thing that they had at the like counter because it was really easy to steal.

33:31

Yo, yo.

33:32

No spherical. Um think very like of its time. It does not exist anymore.

33:40

Ooh, it doesn't. No. No.

33:42

Even a little bit.

33:43

Um, ooh. Is it some kind of super mega bouncy ball?

33:48

Same kind of area, yeah.

33:50

Oh man, I'm getting I feel like I'm getting close. I feel like I'm getting close. What is it? For time's sake. It is a kush ball.

33:57

Uh kush?

33:59

Yeah. I don't I I don't really know how to describe a kush ball without just literally describing you as a couple.

34:03

It's a bouncy ball with just like essentially, yeah.

34:06

Cthulhu bouncy ball.

34:08

I do think you could find a kush ball somewhere. Maybe not called kush anymore, but I don't think so.

34:12

I've not seen them at all. Even being in like dollar stores and stuff like that, I haven't seen them. Okay. Silence.

34:20

We are now approaching the time where you were brought into life. Ooh, roughly. Can you say your year? 88. 88. Yes, this is the year. We're on 88. We're on 88. So you should know these. And in Frank, I think you will. Okay, yeah. Um, this next toy um brought about um destruction amongst an error of nerdism that did not exist prior to anything before it. Um it was like um it's very hard to describe this without. Um it was referred to as just three letters. Um and some people still have them today.

From 35:00

35:01

Yep. I still have one. Three letter Mac?

35:05

Nope.

35:07

This is specifically marketed at kids.

35:10

Oh, just at kids.

35:11

You're not you're thinking the right mindset very much, but now think more for kids.

35:16

So technology's like computer technology for kids, 1988 and in the future. Um man. What else can you think of? Well, for the three letters thing, like don't think of the Nintendo letters for a second. Okay. Well, if we're thinking technology geared towards kids, I'll think of like Nintendo. Okay. And 88. Where do we where are we at in '88? So like Man. VR?

35:44

Like the cheapest letter of Nintendo.

35:47

N, E, S. Yes. Correct. Ness. Lockness Monster. Lock it in.

35:53

Yeah, so 1988 was the Ness.

35:56

Oh, okay.

35:56

Right. Hard to I I didn't want to give you too much there. Right. Um, how about 1989? Can you just guess? Like, Ness blew up. Holy [expletive], this is good. This is amazing. Let's do more. Let's do something like that. Super Nintendo.

36:09

It didn't come out a year or later in 80. Oh. Could try that. Sega. No, wait. What came after regular Nintendo? The NES.

36:18

Power Glove. Actually, that could be true. No. But you're in the right realm. We're talking like a video game thing. Just a game? Yeah, we're talking about video game company? Console. Nintendo Power. Handheld console. Game Boy. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Game Boy came. And I would not have predicted that the Game Boy. Yeah, it was the uh the brick one. Like the one that had the screen screen. You'd [expletive] knock the [expletive] out of it.

36:47

But the Game Boy would be fine.

36:49

Yeah. What is that?

36:53

That's a bike. That's the sound of hatred.

36:58

Sound of a million angry bees. Yeah, I didn't know the Game Boy. The original Game Boy came out a year after the Nest. That's right.

37:03

Yeah, I had no idea.

37:04

I would have thought there was like a technology difference to get things small. So I'm kind of surprised they made that happen.

37:08

Well, have you held an original Game Boy? It is not small.

37:12

No. Fair. Fair.

37:13

How many batteries did that take?

37:15

Uh it's Did you have an original one? Yeah, still have one. Oh, I'd I've never, I've oh I started with the color, which was significantly.

37:21

I also did. My dad picked one up from a yard sale later on. With like it came with like a carrying case and everything for it.

37:28

Because the thing is like really big and it's very heavy. That's almost like an S size. If what you're pantomiming is the actual, and it just had a tiny little screen on it.

37:38

Perfect. Uh but yeah, I think I think it may have taken D batteries. Holy guacamole. It took big batteries. Dang.

37:46

Okay. 1990. The year's 1990. Big year. I was born. Okay. Um need I say less. You're so old. Um how much have you watched of the like Toys That Made Us?

38:00

Uh, just the first season. Okay. Uh, it's on a season you haven't seen.

38:04

Um started as a comic.

38:07

Okay. Mm-hmm.

38:10

Um creator. Yeah. Yeah, correct. Nice. You're welcome.

38:15

Good job, man. We're getting into the area actually.

38:19

I believe you're really going to know a lot of this. I wish I could just say the year and you guess it, but that won't happen. Uh, Chris, do you want to take a stab at 91? Sure. I kind of didn't know what to do with these things.

38:31

Yeah. So this was a toy of sorts that was mostly about like collecting and making your own pogs. Correct. Wow.

38:42

Next. All right. All right. We're going to start getting to the uh 90s movie level soon of like was a played thing. Like. Um okay. I'm going to give you a part of it because it's kind of well, no, maybe not. Okay, maybe not. Maybe not. Um TV show character. Toy.

39:02

1993. TV show character. Uh 92. Oh, 92. Okay. We're past Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at this point.

39:11

Yeah.

39:13

92. Geared towards, I would say, very young children. Cartoon or show. Young, young. Show. Show show. Oh, yeah, it was a show. It was a show. Sorry. It was a show show? Yeah, cartoon is a very wrong word. It was okay. It was live action. Live action. Yeah. Live action. Power Rangers. Action being under like very executive. So not Power Rangers. Yeah. Younger. Geared towards a younger younger. Barney. Okay. No, no.

39:39

Oh, I'm I'm on par with Barney.

39:41

Okay. But Barney. What's he doing? What is what does this Barney do? It's a specific Barney that year. It's 90s. Dancing? Nope. Didn't get that far. What did any other toys start to do then?

39:52

They all they wanted to teach you things. Like reading. Reading or um What did they do? Talking? Yes. Talking Barney. Talking Barney.

39:59

Talking Barney. I I can't remember our talking Barney. I remember Barney, but I guess talking Barney was the 1980s.

From 40:00

40:05

That dinosaur. He really taught me, you know.

40:07

Chris is up for 93 again because I don't know what 93 is.

40:10

Yep, no idea.

40:11

Don't know what that is. Okay, we actually don't know 93, so maybe you might know. Maybe you know. Do you know what a talk boy is?

40:17

Yeah, I had a talk boy. What's a talk boy? So the talkboy was in Home Alone 2. Macaulay Culkin had that big old handheld thing that put a cassette in it, and you can record things on it. That's all a talk boy was.

40:27

So it was a cassette recorder.

40:28

Yes. But geared from Home Alone 2. That's why everyone bought it, because it was a talkboy. And there was also a talkboy pen, which I had one of those too.

40:37

Was the pen the size of a cassette player?

40:39

No, the pen was, I'm not even going to say a PHS. The pen was about the size of my e-cigarette. So it was not an incognito pen.

40:49

And you would be like, What did you say, Becky?

40:54

And it recorded about five seconds worth of information. I think I probably do. I remember toys like that. So I didn't know they were called a talkboy. It was a talkboy. Got it. I also confused cassette with VHS. When you were first talking, I was thinking of when you said Macaulay Gawkin talking to our VHS.

41:10

Like that's what I was imagining. It's about the same size. And the the mouthpiece was extendable, which made it super cool.

41:16

Okay. 94, you've misquoted as another year. This is think Japan and Saban, I think is the company. That's gonna be Power Rangers. Yeah, Power Rangers was 1994. Um specifically, you can imagine that flippy head thing. Yeah, as a year off.

41:34

I had a morpher. It came with different coins that you put in there. I had one of those. Yeah, that was cool. Okay. Nobody cared at my house when it was morphine time. Yeah, they didn't give two [expletive] about.

41:45

I mean, can you just so many children ran around doing this? Like just kung fu like fake [expletive] kung fu, like whatever, the like morphing like transform thing.

41:55

I always thought their suits were so tight that they had to make some kind of movement in order for their mouth to have voice come out. Like that's why they went, did you really think? I really thought that. That's crazy.

42:06

Yeah, yeah, no, that's not the case. Oh, um turns out Japanese. It's pure, pure sex. Yep. Um okay, 1995. I'm just gonna say three things. Um Princess Diana, hope, diamonds. They're buying diamonds for the kids. And I can't think of a third one. Um yeah, it's kind of tough.

42:28

Oh, those dolls, those collectible dolls. What were they called? What collectible dolls? Um God, what were they called? Alliteration. They were the the the the porcelain ones, right? No, not beanie babies. Beanie babies. It was beanie babies? Yeah. Beanie babies.

42:41

19 1995 was beanie babies. And I always like to think about the the Princess Diana one and I'm like, I know the stuff.

42:47

My brain is just a scrambled mess right now.

42:49

I had a lot of beanie babies. Did you? Yeah. Same that's not surprising. Oh, did you?

42:53

Yeah. Nice.

42:55

Um, let's see. Uh 1996. We'll only go to what, 2000?

43:00

Yeah, that's fine.

43:01

Okay. 96. Okay. I when I hear the noise this toy makes, I want to puke. Furby. That's your clue. Um, that's true. Not Furby, um, the other one. It's more in teletubby. No, no. It's more like it just goes on and on, and people thought it was hilarious.

43:21

Oh, and it's not Furby?

43:23

Yeah. Like a slightly high register sound.

43:27

Ooh. I feel like I know it. But for time's sake, got another clue?

43:33

Um man.

43:36

Yeah. You know. I dropped the dice. Alright. I don't know what it is. I can't do that. I'm so upset right now.

43:42

Uh, think red and fuzzy.

43:43

Elmo, took a mielmo?

43:44

Yeah, took a mielmo.

43:45

Yep, correct. Uh all right. After this, I know every one of us had one of these in this room. Um it was like a pocket toy. Tamagotchi. Yeah. Correct. Now you're just becoming more sentient and like knowing of it. So 1998. Um look like a gremlin. Furby. Yeah. And 1999, um, back to Japan. Uh this is more of a franchise. Um it's a big franchise. Sailor Hello Kitty. Uh uh started takeoff in 1999.

44:18

1999. Japanese franchise Pokemon. Yeah, yes.

44:21

Yep, gotta catch them all. And lastly, we'll end with the 2000s. Uh this was um In the year 2000.

44:29

In the year 2000. This is that coin sketch. You remember that back in the day?

44:34

Yeah, yeah. And then 2000 happened and it was weird, but so this is one that I had.

44:40

It kind of started another I would say it started another wave of like sports themed things. Ooh, okay. Skateboard?

44:48

Uh not quite, beyond that. I borrowed it from my neighbor and then left it under a tree near a store, and then it got stolen, and then I told my neighbor someone stole it out of my yard.

44:57

Was a hoverboard out by then?

44:59

No. No.

From 45:00

45:00

Uh you're thinking right. Razor scooter? Yes.

45:03

Correct. Razor scooter. My next clue is going to be destroys your shins. Yes. Razor scooter. And you try to like spin it around, and inevitably at some point you hit yourself with a little bit.

45:12

Like it was even that cool. Like, yeah, you can whip a little thing around. Like, come on. But man, if someone did it right now, I'd be like, that's pretty cool.

45:18

Nate, you got most of these. You did pretty good. Like, I knew, and I knew you would know these. Big wig toy guy. Right. Yeah. Apparently you guys were doing real well in Perump.

45:27

No. I just remember all these toys because I'm like, oh, I wish my mom would buy me one.

45:33

Let's let's just say like 94 on. Between 94 and 2000, how many of these did you guys have? I'm gonna tally it up and I'll hand you the paper. Chris, you tallied up.

45:47

So while they're tallying it up, I'm gonna tally it up. So out of a total of seven. From nineteen ninety.

45:52

I had six. From so ninety-four to two thousand and include ninety-four and two thousand. I had six out of seven. I had five. Just four. You had four? Wow. So I was the most privileged?

46:05

Yeah. Oh my god. Oh god. You with that Calvin Klein sweatshirt. Wow.

46:11

The only one I didn't have was Tickle Miyomo, but I had Tamagotchi for V. I had a Pokemon. I played Pokemon. I had Razor Scooters. Maybe I had them. I maybe got them like the years after and thought. Maybe I didn't get them the year they came out.

46:22

Who knows? Because I definitely had I definitely had Power Rangers.

46:24

Definitely had Power Rangers.

46:26

But I think this is the time period where I was just only wanting video game [expletive]. Like because I had uh Sega Genesis for a point, Mortal Kombat coming out, and then uh PlayStation 1 was in there at that time period. Um PlayStation 2 was in there at a time period, Xbox, uh Nintendo no GameCube wasn't out yet. No, that was later on.

46:46

That was 2000s at some point.

46:48

So yeah. I think I was more just in a video game [expletive] at that point. So I didn't care about toy toys. Toys makes sense.

46:56

Yeah, as you you can start to see in like the mid-2000s, it becomes Xbox 360, PlayStation 3.

47:02

What the hell is the RoboSapien? Yeah, I didn't know about that one.

47:06

I think I remember the Robosapien. Is that some kind of sex toy? Oh, because that's why I would remember because you're always pushing the agenda. Always pushing the agenda. Thanks so much for listening. I won't be explaining RoboSapien today. Um uh gotta do a quick plug. If you liked our show, make sure to leave a review. It helps smooth us in the algorithms on whatever. Um, so if you are in Overcast, whatever, hop an Apple Podcast, leave us a review or Podbean or any podcast, addicts, whatever, whatever um podcast director you're using. And go ahead and share an episode with your friends. Share that's your challenge. Share an episode that you think was actually funny. I know this one probably wasn't. Um some of them could have been. Yeah. Right?

47:06

Find a friend who would like an episode. They had toys growing up. You had toys, don't pretend you didn't. So share an episode and become patron. It's as little as a dollar, and it might help Nate actually buy a gift for his wife this year. Probably not. Hopefully, it spends more than a dollar, though. Thanks for listening, guys. I'll talk to you next week. Bye.
