Oh, mine well, one of them was a Volkswagen Jetta, and I got all the way home and I'm like, what the [expletive]? I just bought a [expletive] Jetta. They're like, time to go back. You know, taking it back. It was like a champagne colored Jetta. What was it like when you got back? Like, where they're like, hey, they're like, what's wrong? Everything okay? I'm like, yeah, I don't want this. You still got my car? And they're like, yeah, we got your car. And they cleaned it and everything already.

0:00

And I'm like, cool, I'm taking my car back. I don't want it.

1:11

Hello and welcome to Nat One Presents the Podcast. Hey Nate. Hey. How's it going? Uh it's going good.

1:17

We just recorded an episode with your mom, the lovely Kim.

1:19

Yeah, it was pretty nice.

1:20

It was a lot of fun. She shared a lot of funny stories really in a short period of time. It was amazing.

1:25

Oh, yeah, it was a constant burn fact.

1:27

I wanna like take her to dinner because if just a couple hours, I would have so much dirt on you. Like what I got in just 45 minutes on air was amazing.

1:34

And did you notice the subtle uh chubby bomb? Like he was a chubby kid. Like, yeah.

1:38

I loved it. She was an expert at shade with a smile. Shade with a smile, mate.

1:44

Oh, that's where I get it from. But uh today's a new day.

1:47

New day. Yeah.

1:48

I love my mom, but you know, she's super mean to me.

1:51

You know what I love? What do you love? Uh buying a new vehicle.

1:53

Ooh, did you get a new one?

1:54

I got a new, yeah, yeah. I got I upgraded to an SUV. I have like an adult. Like my first car was a Nissan versa. That is your basic, like, that is your my first car starter car. And I've had that for like six, seven years. So I finally was like, okay, it's time. I'm gonna like, you know, do, you know, get something cool. So uh really happy with my purchase. But let's talk a little bit about the process of buying a car.

2:16

Ooh, depending where you go, it can be awesome or it can be a [expletive] nightmare.

2:22

Like, so right, if if I were to go to a supermarket, you look at something, it's $12.99, and then I know there's gonna be a sales tax. And I like I can if I want to do math, I could even calculate exactly what that price will be. Buying a car, good [expletive] luck, knowing like what the actual cost like so there's there's an MSRP, you know, right for the cars. So some some things I learned. Well, yeah, there's an MSRP, but then you don't know Astarx, of course. And under that is the included options. Now, the included options doesn't mean you had the option of including them, it means they included these options for you that increase it over the MSRP.

2:22

So I paid like something like one of the things I couldn't get off was like a $400 uh like etching of my VIN number and [expletive] like that. Like, yep, yep. And it's just like they're like, Yeah, it came that way. Like, you have to pay for that, supposedly. I don't know, maybe I'm bad at negotiating. So anyway, man, car salesman, it's tough. It they're trying to be super outgoing, but then like it's all always fun and games until you sit down, and then I'm like, you son of a [expletive]. Yeah, but they're the worst. It's not a you son of a [expletive], I'm in moment, like it's a lot of like [expletive] it, I'm out. Like a phony piece of [expletive]. Exactly, exactly.

2:22

It's uh and it just annoys me, and it's not their fault. Like, of course, the salesperson didn't create the system, but like what what what kind of process do you have that like you know that I'm gonna come in knowing you're asking more than it's worth, and I'm expected to come in to try to talk you down, and then we're just trying to see who can get closer. Like, what kind of [expletive] system is that? Like, why can't I just be like, that's the cost of the car? And it is includes whatever fees that manufacture that place needs to make money, but at least like that's the cost, and that's it. Like, why do we have to sit here and go through anyway? I I don't know. Did I get a good deal?

2:22

It's not a good time to buy a car right now, right? But it was a great time to because of the ship chip shortage and the silicon shortage, uh it was a great time for me to trade in. I got I got 5k for my knees, which is like kind of hilarious. Like the car wasn't worth too much more than that brand new. Um so yeah, I got a bunch of money, so I was like, all right, I'll I'll go ahead and get the purchase. I got 0.9 APR, um, which isn't bad. And then I got uh I got 5k for my trade-in. I got like a military rebate. I think sometimes they won't let you do the rebate and the APR, but I made them with the military.

2:22

You can kind of be like, What's my service? You kind of make a difference about it. Um and then I crossed off one or two of the extra things that they were trying to sell me. I didn't buy most of the other services that they try to sell you in the finance office. So I did my best. I don't know, maybe I could have got a better deal, but I I felt pretty good about it. But man, like it can really suck. And I've had experiences, I've had I've had the people try to pull the wool over me, so to speak. One time I'm like, they wanted to sell me here, it's really popular. There's a dealership that sells you like service for life.

2:22

Yes, which is [expletive] stupid because like you're only gonna go every what [expletive] 5,000 miles or whatever, and if that, and then it doesn't make sense. And most people now trading their car after a certain point. So like that cost is really calculated on you having the car forever, right? That's the only way it's gonna be worth it. Yeah, and that's to get your money out of it. Yeah, to actually get your money out of it. So I've had people, I always start by like, take that [expletive] off, I'm not gonna use it, and then they'll be like, okay, well, we dropped it down a thousand.

2:22

I'm like, no, I dropped it down a thousand because I told you I wasn't gonna buy that, and you're still gonna, and I still want you to take a thousand off of this, or I still want more for my trade-in value, and they'll like go back and come back and be like, all right, we did it. And I'll be like, no, but you just like no, like they're like, I got you $500. I'm like, that's the rebate for my military, which we've already discussed. Like, like they'll they'll just like repurpose what you've already talked about or things that you were already entitled to, or not tell you about a rebate, and then give you the rebate. So, man, uh what was your experience with car D?

From 5:00

6:04

Um, it's usually been that. I don't really, like you said, I don't understand. It's not like we're going and haggling with somebody at their house over a used car, like that they're selling you personally, but that's what it [expletive] feels like. It absolutely the whole back and forth, like you have a piece of scrap paper and you write down a number and they show up and they're like, What do you think about that number? And I'm like, I don't [expletive] know it's a number, like I don't want to pay that. Yeah, okay, I'll be back. And then one time And the manager thing, yeah, that happened to me this week. Yeah, every time, like that's the their plan, you know. Like, let me go talk to my manager.

6:04

And one time this [expletive] took 20 minutes. Like, I watched him like slowly walking, had to get a cup of water real fast. He looks back at me, drinks his water, and then goes, I'm like, you [expletive]. Like, I got things to do. But the worst one was in Vegas, and it was me and my girlfriend at the time, and we were gonna buy her a car. And for some reason, I co-signed on it. It ended up being okay, it worked out. But the weirdest thing, we showed up, hey, can we test drive one of those Scion TCs? Oh, yeah, sure, here you go. And just threw us the keys. We're like, what? He just left. He just gave us the keys, and he's like, It's that blue one out there. Like, what?

6:04

So we went and got in it.

7:16

None of that. And then copy your driver's license. That's usually the bare minimum.

7:20

None of it. We both get in the car and we're like, what do we I guess just go around the block? We like it was the shortest test drive ever. We went around the block and like because we felt so uncomfortable. So uncomfortable, yeah. And we're like, I guess we'll take it, you know? But it's the same thing. Like the manager. Did you buy it? Yeah, we ended up buying it.

7:35

That was like his strategy.

7:37

It worked, it's only so good as we had.

7:39

It worked, make you so uncomfortable in the beginning.

7:40

But it's so terrible, like, yeah, we did this for you. Like, no, you [expletive] didn't. Like, I don't want half that [expletive].

7:46

No, I hate it. Like, don't put [expletive] like floor mats. Like, I'll I'll buy my own floor match. Like, why is this calculated in this stuff? You know, like why? And then, like, listen, I'm not like an [expletive]. I get it. Like, there's an M like there is how much the manufacturer made it, and then a dealership probably has to make a little bit of money on top of it, right? I understand put a fixed [expletive] cost, put a 5%, put whatever on top of that, right? And then call it a [expletive] day, you know? Like this whole like, I have to argue with you about things you add, like, is there nitro in the tire? Like, oh my god, god, [expletive] please, you know?

7:46

And then, like, not like I'm not like a [expletive] car head or whatever, like uh like a motorhead and whatever the term is, you know, like there are lots of people who like they don't they just they came to co get a vehicle and they don't know nothing about this stuff, and those people probably get [expletive] ripped off, man.

8:30

Right, you know? Oh yeah, but the thing they didn't see coming with you is you know business, and like not gonna be pushed around.

8:37

Yeah, you I definitely probably didn't like overpay or anything like that. I don't I maybe didn't get a good deal because right now you kind of can't because of the the inventory's low with like those chip shortages and stuff, so you're not gonna get an amazing deal. But no, yeah, I'm not like dumb and like literally the uh the bare minimum you can do. So some tips if you if you wanna if if you're if it's 20 late 2021 right now and you listen to our podcast, a couple tips for you. If you do have a trade-in, uh they're gonna try to undersell your trade-in.

8:37

Uh go to like Carfax, go to Kelly Blue Book, see what the value it's it's recommending for a trade-in, and and ask for like show them that and tell them you want the max value. Yeah, I want that. And and because of the chip shortage, you can get the max value. Yep. And I went to one place and they're like, oh, we can't do higher than that. And I was like, bye. And I left. Easy as that, you know? Um, don't be afraid to walk walk away from a car. Do your check on your rebates first, um, go online because they might not always tell you. And there's weird ones where like obviously there's a lot that's like, oh, you're a college grad or oh, you're in the military.

8:37

But then there's also stuff where if they email you a quote first, so if you get them to send you a quote for a car before you go in, you'll get uh like $500 off. Yep. Or a thousand or something, but it has to be like them messaging you first. Like, so figure out what and those can be easier to trigger if you you know fill out the right form on a website or something. So do just you know, obviously, like anything else, do your research. Um, and then just know MSRP, like pretty much expect to pay like almost like they're gonna try almost like $5k, right? Because there's the cost of the car, there's the sales tax, which is gonna be a lot.

8:37

There's the yeah, the fact like just moving the car to the dealership. So expect like whatever the MSRP is, they're gonna start you at 5k higher than that once they factor in. And some of those are actual real costs, you can't do anything. Like you have to pay registration on your car, you might get them to waive it for you, and or they'll pay it for you, but like someone's gotta pay that. Like, you know, so not all of it's like in fake inflated, but so and then just you know, have an honest conversation.

8:37

Anything you see on the MSR, like especially when they start bundling stuff, um, ask them to break that [expletive] line by line, and guaranteed there probably something you need there, but there's also probably something you don't need there that they're trying to squeeze in on, yeah. And that's just the name of the game. And best thing, don't be afraid to walk away.

From 10:00

10:45

Yes, that's the biggest one because anytime I've walked away, yeah, nine times out of ten, those people are calling me by the time I make it to the next car lot.

10:54

I I've only bought twice, so have you have you had that before where you've gotten the call back? I've never gotten the callback yet, but um, but I did. I turned someone down yesterday or on Thursday. They didn't give me, they gave me, they were offering me a deal, and I'm like, I still think I can do better elsewhere, and I did. Yeah. Um, so don't the best thing you can do is is walk away. I also bought a different vehicle yesterday than I would have on Thursday, and I'm happy. I went out. Yeah, I went for like a better model.

10:54

I was I got out of Nissan Rogue, and I was gonna, I was looking at the lower model, it was like a rogue sport, was like kind of what I was thinking of the other day. So take the time to go home and be like, did you now that you're like out of an you know you're out of the excitement, was that actually the vehicle you liked? Like, you know, because don't buy so one thing you might not want to do is compromise on a vehicle when they're so expensive that if you're gonna buy a vehicle, like make sure you're actually happy in it. And if you can afford it, don't buy a cheaper model just to have a $30 less payment, you know, every month. Like that's silly too.

11:46

Because I've bought I know this is kind of embarrassing. I have terrible buyer's remorse, and I get overly excited when I buy things. So there's been at least three times where I bought a car, took it home, and I'm like, you know what, I don't want this car. And there's like really there used to be like a two-week window. Really? I don't know if they still have it or not, but there used to be a two-week window where you could just bring it back.

12:04

I did not know that. And I've done that three times. I I I don't recommend like one, make sure that's a real thing, but I don't recommend that. Like if you can have the self-restraint to like go home and even just like a day sometimes will be enough for you to be like, that would be that was close, but I need it like bigger, or I need you know, four-wheel drive or whatever your your criteria is.

12:22

Oh, mine well, one of them was a Volkswagen Jetta, and I got all the way home, and I'm like, What the [expletive]? I just bought a [expletive] Jetta. They're like, time to go back, you know, taking it back. It was like a champagne-colored Jetta. What was it like when you got back? Like, were they like, hey, they're like, what's wrong? Everything okay? I'm like, yeah, I don't want this. You still got my car? And they're like, Yeah, we got your car, and they cleaned it and everything already. And I'm like, Cool, I'm taking my car back. I don't know. God, dude, they must have hated you. Oh, I guarantee they did.

12:49

Yeah, that's oh yeah, it sucks. I didn't see I've never because I bought the first time I bought a car, I did not have a vehicle, so it was kind of like I need one. Right. Um, and then this one, I I did a lot of research. I I knew I would be getting something at some point. Um, I've never I can't imagine what that must be like to be like, nah, like in just a 180 of the whole.

13:06

And that was when I lived in Perump and the dealership was in Vegas, so it was an hour drive there and back. You know, like yeah, sorry, I'm not feeling it.

13:16

How and when you buy a car, also a fun fact that you know, for people who are newer to buying vehicles, like you're gonna be there a few hours. Like, that's just not you're not walking in and out unless you're going to car message. I always to be honest, I always forget every time. Like, I always think like I know what I want, it's just gonna be like an hour and a half, and like it's always like three easy at least. Um, so so were you there for a few hours, went through that whole process, drove an hour home, then finally was like, [expletive] no, drove an hour back.

13:41

Yeah, it was like four days later. I'm like, nah, bringing it back, take it back. And another time I couldn't get approved because uh for some reason the interest rate was too high and I needed a co-signer, and I'm like, they'll be they were like, Okay, I'm sure you'll get a co-signer, go ahead and take it home. So I went home, drove it around for a week. I had a 350Z and I loved it. Yeah, and then uh I asked my dad, like, hey, you want to co-sign for me? And he looked at the interest rate they were trying to give me. It was like 18% or something. Oh my god, and he's like, I'm not cosigning for that. Oh my god.

13:41

And so I just gave it back to him, you know, like sorry, I drove it for a week, I drifted the [expletive] out of it, all the rubber on the tires was gone.

14:18

Fun fact for listeners uh a good, a acceptable APR if you don't get like special financing, like zero or zero point nine or whatever. Um, four to seven percent is what you're you should be looking for. Obviously, closer to four the better, but even like a five, like my husband was like had no credit in this country, he was brand new, and he got like six point something with like very little credit. So unless your credit's really [expletive], but like to be real, then don't like buy a used vehicle, right? Don't don't don't finance like if you have bad credit and they're giving you an 18 for 16 ABR car, just buy it buy something you can afford, get fix your credit, and go back in a year or so.

14:18

Like, don't it's not worth it.

14:59

That was a terrible time. I think my credit rating was like a 450 at the time.

From 15:00

15:02

Yeah, I fixed it now.

15:04

I'm good now.

15:05

But at the time, that was [expletive] terrible. It's great, it's a process though. It's funny because you there's a lot like to know to know, and I think it reminds me of buying a house, but buying a house is a lot more expensive, yes, and it's a longer process, and like it rightfully shows so because it's a very important like process and a very big piece of uh a very big asset in your life. But a car should not be like this much effort, this much work, shouldn't be so hard, and they shouldn't be able to screw people so badly on it, you know. And we live we live in Tucson.

15:05

Well, well, we live close to Tucson, and there's a military base, and you know, like car dealers and military people, like they love to sell new service members who are getting money for the first time in their life, like 20% APR vehicles, and it's like that's yeah, it should be like just hand over your bonus. Yeah, it should honestly be illegal. Oh, wait, like it's like it's it's so messed up. So um, that said, car dealers aren't bad people. Uh they get a bad rap sometimes. Like it's just the system itself to me is perfect. It's broke. Um that's that's my rant today. But yeah, new car. Pretty pretty excited. Um check it out. What I want to talk about this week, Nate, is game nights. Um I know we're pretty passionate.

15:05

We're both uh we don't have a lot in common, Nate, but gaming. I think I think we like to play games, especially like tabletop stuff. Oh, yeah. Um we're both very competitive, and so I think you too are are a big uh appreciator of game nights. Correct. Um we've we've heard on the show multiple times the story that will probably come back up. Um Robert Redford. Yes. Um, but yeah, I I too have had heated moments in my lifetime. I think, you know, I mean most people have. Party games are great because in the like ever-evolving world of like online games, most games now, if it's multiplayer, it's not like local multiplayer, it's usually online now. Yeah, most games don't even have local multiplayer games.

16:51

Like the couch games, right? Couch co-op.

16:53

Yeah, they're not, they're not, you know, it's it's a dying, it's dying off. So there's something extra special, especially in the pandemic during COVID times. Going to somebody's house and playing a board game, it's a good feeling. Oh, yeah. What's the last board game you played?

17:04

Uh the last one was actually the one you gave me. It was that uh Dungeons and Dragons like quick dungeon game. Right, right. And uh me and Corvin played it, and then uh me, Corvin, and Megan played the next round, and that was actually pretty good for a quick little like intro to D kind of thing. Nice. And I had a blast playing it, it was fun. Very cool.

17:22

Yeah, you can go play it again?

17:23

Oh, probably. I guarantee it.

17:25

Cool.

17:25

Yeah, so last night I I'm a big fan. So the first topic of games, uh, which I think it's it's really trending right now, but also it's been around forever. Kind of like I don't know the category, but games where you accuse people of stuff. Those are my favorites. So sus games. Yes, sus. So last night I played, I'd heard of it for a long time. It's been around for a while, but it was the first time I actually played Secret Hiller.

17:46

You have never played.

17:47

Um, super fun, super fun. Have you played werewolf? Um have you played okay. Um, have you ever played a game or I think it's called Mafia? Games where you like put your head down, someone is like a killer, and then they can kill off other people, and each round you don't know who the killer is, and you're trying to like vote him off, and then like each round, if you fail, that person can like kill somebody off. Those those are like I I mean among us is kind of based on that kind of concept. So anyway, Secret Halo is kind of like that. Basically, you take turns each round, there's a president and he elects a chancellor, and then the rest of the people vote, yeah, a nine.

17:47

Um and then basically there's like a liberal and a fascist party. The lib the fascists know who each other are, and but the liberals don't. So the liberals are trying to like the one team is trying to pass a liberal agenda, which is like their team, and the other team is trying to pass a fascist, and there's a Hitler, and Hitler gets like special abilities, or if you kill the Hitler, it ends the game.

18:43

Oh he's like the golden snitch.

18:45

Yes, exactly, exactly, exactly. Um, so it was a good time, lots of fun played, and like I said, games where uh where you think somebody like oh you're definitely the Hitler, and then it's like oh he's the Hitler, or she's the Hitler, it's it's amazing. Those moments are what I live for. What uh what what's like some of your favorite uh game night games?

19:04

Uh for the game night games, uh since I have children, most of them revolve around them. But we have been playing like DD for a game night, and then there's the board game we just got last time. Um what was the other one? You guys were playing Risk a while ago, right? Yes, we were doing Risk, and that was a multiple night affair there for at least a couple months because Corbin loves everything about stuff like that.

19:28

Yeah, it that's right up to that.

19:30

Yeah, and then uh before that, when Corbin was a little bit younger, we were really big into no thank you, evil. Oh, I've never heard of that. What's that? So that is like DD for kids that are age like four to seven before you really want to get them into DD. This sets up for that. So like there's still you roll the virus, yeah, an enabler for DD for sure. And then like you can make your own stories. I was always I would always make our own stories because it comes with like easy ones, but Corbin was past that. So and then you make your own character and what they look like and helps them really kickstart their imagination.

19:30

Okay, so we played a lot of that, very cool, and then other than that, it's been uh Corbin loves Monopoly for some [expletive] reason because he wants the family to break apart, I think.

From 20:00

20:14

So I I have a few stories on these. So uh, first off, risk in college. I don't really know how this started, but a bunch of my friends oh, I I made this observation that you could start a club all you needed was like 20 signatures in college and you could start a club. Oh yeah, and then you could apply for a budget. And I was seeing people get budgets for like dumb [expletive]. So I'm like, all right, listen guys, like let's just you know, in college, all you care about is free food. Yeah, that's that's where I was at usually. So I was like, hey, we're gonna start the Risk Club.

20:14

And what we did, all we basically we've I got 20 signatures of my friends, and basically we just want to see how big of a budget we could get to just order food like once a week. And then we just said that we were gonna play Risk every night and call it the Risk Club. And uh they gave us they only gave us like 40 bucks, which is enough to like buy the game and buy like two pizzas or something. But I did it. I did yeah, I did it. And basically it was just that whole thing of like, let me see if I can start a fake club and get a fake budget to do something, and it worked absolutely.

20:14

So I don't know if that's how colleges still work, but uh Risk Club, that's where it's at. Right. You saw the system and you took advantage of it. I think we only played it once and that was it. Um I think we never played it again.

21:23

The the actual game was you seeing if you could get the funding. Exactly.

21:27

That was the real that was the real the real game back then. Um and then Monopoly. I can't stand Monopoly anymore. I can. Um, it's not fun. Like it's not a it's just not a fun game. Right. And and everybody it's not because everybody talks about like flipping it over, like it's not a well paced game, right in my opinion. Like it it's almost like someone needs to go back and like rewrite the rules to just actually be interesting. Yeah. I I think it's fascinating. Most people play Monopoly not totally correct. Wrong. Yes, we'll just go with that. And not to say that I care, I actually like to play it in a wrong way, to be honest, but Like everybody has their different variations, like the free parking, right? Yeah.

21:27

So that's not not an actual thing. It's just a space where nothing happens. It's one of the only spaces aside from Go. And even Go, you get cash. Right. It's a space where just nothing occurs. But no, that's not how I play. Any tax, anything you pay into goes in the middle. Literally, that's how everyone plays that [expletive] game, right? It was I was shocked at the age of whenever whatever I was when I'm gonna get.

22:23

Really? Yeah.

22:24

No, it's not an actual rule. And so other [expletive] like that. There's weird stuff like can you buy one house at a time or can you do them uneven? Like those are always huge debates depending on whose house you're at. Um but I think it's boring. I think it's a boring [expletive] game. It takes a while to wound up because like the first few rounds you have to just buy stuff, yeah, then it's until it's all gone, and then it's almost like the whole concept of monopoly is stupid in business in real life and in actual life because it's like either somebody gets everything and it's not a fun game because they're gonna steamroll you, or everything's divided, and now you guys have to bicker and argue.

22:24

Like it's just like none of it's really that enjoyable, right? It's not a great game.

23:03

Like, yeah, it's not fun. And then another thing I saw was the house strategy. Have you heard that one? No. So there's only so many houses that come with the board game, and you're not allowed to use anything other than those houses. Yeah, so the house strategy is you buy all the cheap properties, everything you can, put the four houses on it.

23:21

Not the hotel. Use the house. Not the hotel, just the house.

23:24

Nobody else can buy it. Yes, then nobody else can put houses and you win. It's a game of attrition where yeah, they'll only be paying 150 bucks for landing on the purple ones, but still.

23:33

But they can't do anything. But right, like, but that's not the type of game I want to play, right? Like it's terrible. No game should be a war of attrition over hours. It's just unless you're playing risk. It's not good. Yeah, so totally different. Yeah, I don't see risk is enjoyable though, you know. There's a battle, you know, at least a conquest. And well, and there's more chance involved aside from just what you land on. I don't know. And maybe it maybe it run, it maybe it hits home, like a game where I just pay bills. Like, wow, sounds sounds so much different than my real life.

24:00

I can't wait to get done with this so I can go pay my bills.

24:02

Yeah, it's it sucks. Fun fact though, I think I told you this. Uh I visited some family in Mexico because my spouse is from there, and they play, they they basically have it's not called Monopoly, it's called Torista. Um it is almost verbatim the same instead of like each spots a country. And usually they're kind of grouped by like continent. So like Mexico, Mexico, Canada, North America, uh like one set of like three. Yeah, one of the things, and then another set of three would be like some South America ones, and another set would be like so um, but otherwise, almost exactly the same.

24:02

The only thing I don't know if this is a rule in actual Monopoly that we just skip over, but you you had the game could not you could not trade until every property was bore bought. So when there was only like two left that people weren't landing on, we had to keep going right until they landed on those two. Then we had to go around and everybody had to take turns trading. It was a little bit more like diplomatic and like political, which was even worse, in my opinion, honestly. Right. Uh, but otherwise, almost the same. Like the structure, like it wasn't railroads, but it was something else. So uh oh no railroads, you're out. I don't I don't remember what they called them, and then the utilities were something else too.

24:02

But yeah, same same structure, very, very just just slightly different. Um but I still hated it. It was fun because at least at the language barrier, I was able to, like, since it was the same game, I could be like, oh, well, that word means that because it's like the same.

From 25:00

25:30

Yeah, my card matches.

25:31

So it was a cool learning experience, but anyway, Monopoly is a piece of [expletive]. Oh, yeah. I would be totally fine never playing that game again.

25:36

I agree 100%. Ever in my throw it in the trash. There's wait, I'd rather play shoots and ladders or Candyland. You know, some real baby games.

25:44

Absolutely games. Absolutely. What is your if if you had to throw away all of your board games except one, what would you keep?

25:51

Ooh, that's a tough one. I'd probably just keep risk because we were on a uh battleship uh phase for a little while. Yeah, but Corvin's the only one who usually plays with me at battleship, and he's officially the [expletive] worst. Because he's like, Oh, hold on, let me stretch over here. E9. E9. I'm like, you hit every time he's like, oh, let me just do I gotta go look at something over here. Uh G7. You [expletive]. I know what you're doing. What are you talking about?

26:25

Have you seen uh I'm obviously something not to play with your son, but like battle shots or stuff like that? Like, have you played that? Uh it's it's the game of battleship, but they're like shot glasses, and so if they someone like sinks your like whatever, and you have to do the shot and stuff. That looks like a lot of things.

26:44

He would have like soda in his and I'd have booze in mine, and I would just get drunk and cry. Like, this is our father's unbonding time.

26:53

Alright, so but it's so it it would maybe would have been battleship, but it's risk now.

26:58

Yeah, for sure. It'd be risk. Speaking of like, I need to go play with him right now, thinking about it, because we get such so stuck um video games now that it's hard, but we need to really bring it back because I enjoy having a nice like table and then playing a board game as a family.

27:13

Yeah, I don't know. It's a family like playing a board game reminds me of family, like video game, yes or no, but like a board game, I don't know. I do it, and when I say family, it could be like it's my closest friend. Like I don't play board games with people I don't like fun facts. So it's kind of like if I play a board game with you, like that's uh like I don't know, it's something, it's it's a it's a bond.

27:31

Right, it's like Fast and Furious, like we're family. Oh, and then another fun one we just got was uh it's a meme game. So that one's pretty funny. Like a meme? Yes, so it's like cards against humanity, but instead it's a meme picture, and then you have to pick out the funniest one. That one's been pretty funny.

27:45

There's so many, like people make so many good games. There's uh we could spend a lifetime reviewing games. Hopefully, if that one ever turns into something, we can just start doing that. Um, one I really enjoyed, I don't remember the name, but basically there is like two teams and there's train tracks, and then there's a judge. And so what happens is like your goal is to get the person to run over the other team. So you're trying to put stuff on your train track that like so it's like um it's like baby Jesus, and then the other person's like, okay, but this person has the cure to cancer, and then and then you do like three rounds of it, and it's like, so what do you do?

27:45

Like on one side, there's a scientist with a cure to cancer, uh, and uh like a key to the portal of hell, and then on the other side, it's like Hitler's parents and like a bunch of other stuff, or so so you have to like which is worse, or like, and that was a lot of fun. It got really heated. That was a good time. I'll I'll try to look up the name for that and share it with you. Um, my go-to, like if I had to throw away all games but one, said it was a Catan. Is it Catan or Catan?

28:44

I don't I always thought it was Catan, or maybe I'm thinking of Chris Catan from old SNL.

28:48

I don't I I literally don't know. I've heard both many times both pronunciation, so I don't know which it is. But uh I like Catan. It's such like a simple it there's a little bit of a learning curve, but once you play it, it's like such a simple game based on probability, a lot of fun. I feel like very different every time we play. Like truly, you could kill at one time and and suck another, and you can try definitely lots of room to try different strategies, but there's just five resources at the end of the game. Like the game doesn't change very much. The rules, the core rules are super straightforward. So uh Davita's really good at that one. Um that that would be one we would never throw away.

28:48

Um, my go-to, do you have a go-to like when you have guess over? Like, what's the party game? Oh, it's definitely uh for adults.

29:29

It's the cards against humanity, is the best one to have. But I found we have another one called Throw Throw Burrito.

29:36

Oh, I've heard it, I've seen that all over.

29:37

It's it actually hilarious. It's actually fun, but you you gotta be quick. Like uh the way Corvin's brain works, he has a hard time with things that are just going lightning fast, and then he gets caught up a little bit. And also he's only 10, you know? So like I'm going fast, and you have to follow the rules on the card and keep going. And then once you get to a they come with two foam burritos, and then once you get to the throw card, you grab it and just chuck and hit him in the face with it. It's [expletive] a blast.

From 30:00

30:02

That's amazing. I've seen the package all the time, but I haven't I haven't gotten to that one. My go-to is actually if you heard of the Jackpot games. Uh uh. Um, so they're games you play on your phone, it like puts up a prompt, and there's like there's tons of there's a variety of them.

30:14

Oh, I think you did tell me about that, and it's very similar to like the bar games that you would yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly.

30:20

And then there's like they have party packs, so I think there's like seven or eight party packs out at this point in time, but um the favorite ones is uh oh my god, I can't remember the name. There's one basically where you have to pick out who's lying. So everybody it'll count down like three, two, one, and then one person it says you're the faker, so just act natural. And then everybody else, it will say, like, raise your hand if um you didn't do laundry this week. And so everybody like raises their hand, and then the faker has to decide do I raise my hand or not raise my hand? And then at the end, everybody's like, Well, who is it? And and that one's really fun. So that's the one, okay.

30:20

One time I got really drunk and I did make somebody cry because we were playing that game, right? And we kept picking, we just kept picking this one person, not like as a not they seem the most sus. It just it just seemed like based on their answers, we thought they were the faker. Right. And they're like, This this person was like, Well, I won't go into it too much, but I think they thought we were targeting them, and I was also drunk, so maybe I was. I don't know. I was drinking. Alcohol didn't help, but anyway, I think I like stormed off at one point.

30:20

Like this person like was basically like you are just blah blah blah, and then I stormed off, and then I think that person was also really drunk, so then that person cried. So I haven't played with that group of friends that game, but that one's one of my favorite. Um, I think it's called faking it. Um, and it's part of one of the Jackbox party packs. And then also there is one uh what what the [expletive] is it called? Quiplash. That's that's a common one. Okay, and that's just they give you funny prompts, you write answers, and then people like they put two answers next to each other and people vote. Oh, which was the best one? Yeah, which is the best. So you play these, it sounds like fun. Definitely.

30:20

We should do like a but the those type of games are all like four plus people. Right. There's murder trivia party, which is kind of like it's like a trivia game, but it's like Saw themed. So what happens is each round and asks you questions, and if you get it wrong, you are like up for elimination, and you have to do like a mini-game and you could die. And if you die, you get less options to choose from for multiple choice. And it might even like you, you basically like potentially maybe can't pick the right answer because you like cut off a finger and that's A, B, C, or D. Right.

30:20

And then at the end, the people when there's only one person left alive, um, it's like a race, it's like a rapid fire trivia race to the finish line. And so a ghost could still win and like take over like the one living person. It's it's basically just a trivia game, but it's like saw themed. Yeah, it's it's a lot of fun.

32:43

So I'm interested.

32:44

There's a lot of them, yeah. We'll we'll definitely do. And what's cool is they work really well with remote so we could stream it uh and play with wait, play with people. So that's my go-to because basically everybody just plays on their phone. Right. Um, you enter a room code, and then a lot of them have really some of them are more complicated, but some of them are just like put something funny, right? You know, um I think I can't think of any of the prompts recently, but um yeah, that that that's my go-to party mix. Um, and then I love Myer Party back in the day. Um yeah, that that was a lot of fights in college, but like that one got really heated, but good memories there. Oh, yeah.

32:44

But the classics one through four.

33:23

You know, and then the mini games, some of them are legit, they require skill. Yeah, and others are like, [expletive], you just pulled a lever and you got lucky. You know, like, yeah, you got the star. Like, congratulations, [expletive] Lations.

33:34

It got so I still love them, but one through I think one through four are amazing, and then everything after Mario Party 4 just got well, I I five and six weren't bad too. I think they were fine as long as they're on the GameCube, but once they nothing's been good since the Wii on for Mario Party, but they are coming out. I'm really excited for the Switch. Um, should be I think November, October of this year. Uh there's like, I don't know what they're calling it, maybe Mario Party All-Stars or something. So they're bringing back like from like the first four games, like the hundred mini games and like the top four boards. So I'm really excited. And David is he played a lot of that. He's coming up.

33:34

He's he's yeah, he's really good at that. So yeah, he's hard to play the game night. We have to, we have to. We have to. Um see, uh have you played Dominion? No, I haven't. What's up? Huge fan of Dominion. Card game. It's a card game, um, and the whole like concept is that you have to build up to uh you're building your deck. So you start off with like three cards and or like five cards, some of them are money, and some of them are victory points, like property. And basically, like you use money to buy cards that are then like magic cards, they have effects, right? And you keep building your deck to try to [expletive] over other players, but ultimately you have to get more money to get more victory points.

33:34

I got to do that. And then you that's it. And so your deck gets bigger and bigger, and you're just shuffling through it. Um, it's really fun. It's like playing magic, but there's only like each time you the game comes with like let's say like 40 different card types um that you can play throughout the round. And so you would just pick like I forgot how many, maybe it's like 10 each game. You just pick the 10 card types, you can pair them together for cool like strategies and effects, and then everybody starts. You like, okay, I have three gold, I buy this card. You buy eventually five gold, buy another card. Okay, I have ten, I can buy this piece of victory point in first person. It's it's a really good one.

33:34

We played a ton of that in college.

From 35:00

35:20

Oh, yeah.

35:20

Uh very strategic, but fast pace for people who have card games but don't want to keep reinvesting in like magic booster packs and [expletive] like that. You just buy one, like then, and they have expansions that will then come with like another 40 types of cards, right? But you can just get like one of the base games and it's it's a blast. Oh, yeah. So I we need like a like a Torta board game, like something to try a couple different things.

35:41

Because I like the idea of that things that have like a really super entry level, yep, but then like the ceiling, the skill sealing on it is so high that you can do crazy [expletive] later on.

35:50

Those are good. Yeah, I'd say Dominion, especially with some of the expansions, like lots of lots of flexibility to do like really cool [expletive].

35:58

Like stuff people haven't even seen before. Like I didn't even know you could put that together.

36:01

Yeah, that stuff's cool, but when when it comes to having guests, I just want to make sure everybody I don't like having to explain how a game works, right? Like if you have a bunch of guests and like people are always good sports about it, but the reality is if it takes like 45 minutes to teach people how to play a game, it's like it's not worth it. So I like a game. That's why I usually pick the jackbox and like Quiplash. Yep, where like, okay, pick up your phone, enter the code. Okay, it's gonna ask you a question, write something funny. Okay, now vote for the funnier one. Like, yeah, I can just talk people through and it just works, you know.

36:01

Those are definitely like for big group stuff, that's usually what I lean towards. Yeah, but if it's like my core group of friends, like, all right, let's all learn this really cool game, yeah, and then let's like let's play it all the time.

36:39

Not DD, because that [expletive] takes forever.

36:41

Oh, yeah. I mean, I still get the rules wrong all the time. I mean, you you hear us, you hear us on the show. Yeah, we don't miss quote. Whatever, whatever. So um, any any upcoming board games? Anything you're excited about?

36:53

I used to be more into it, like uh like uh had like the the emails come in and be like, oh, this is coming out and this is coming out, and then we started really getting into the role-playing game after I started playing DD with you guys at the mall. And then after that, I found Cthulhu, and then there's been a couple other that piqued my interest, but nothing I really want to dive into because at this point it's so hard to actually find a game because most of the time I just want to play games with Corvin. Yeah. If we're gonna do games with anything, because I don't have a lot of friends, meaning like Nate's my only other friend. So if I can't play with Corvin, then it's kind of out the window.

37:27

Yeah, it's a time thing, and what sucks is that like the your best case scenario is you're like every Wednesday we'll play blank, but then like life happens. If you're like an adult, like an accessible, like dull different and like you have a family, it's not gonna work out, you're not gonna be able to play every Wednesday, and inevitably whatever game group you have is gonna fall apart. So it sucks. Like, I don't want to be part of I've been part of groups where they get pissed when you're not available that one day every week or those two days every week. That's not funny. I'm dead. It's it's not possible, you know. It's just like so it's better off having these games that you can just play with your kids or whatever.

37:27

Um, but that said, sliding over DMs. You wanna if you ever want to try a Nat One game night we're down, we'll try it out. I'm here for you. A one-off, we're here for it. Yeah, we're here for it. Um, Nate, I'm going on vacation next week. Oh, that's exciting. I'm I'm pretty pumped. Um, just going to Vegas. Going to Nevada. Oh, yeah. Technically Nevada. What's what's the deal with Vegas? Vegas is not in Nevada. No, Vegas is Nevada. Okay.

38:24

It's just the the rules in Nevada are really weird. There's like no state tax. You know, the law.

38:30

Someone told me it was like just over the border or some [expletive] like that. No. Or Las Vegas, or the strip is over Las Vegas or something. I don't know. No, it's nothing weird like that. Okay.

38:38

But then like uh the prostitution laws are really weird, and it's like things, it's still like the wild west out there, basically. I hope it never changes.

38:47

I'm I'm excited because obviously with the pandemic and Delta variant, we're still not like through the thick of it yet. And so the one thing like I could plan other places, like vacations, but [expletive] might close down. But Vegas, they're gonna keep those doors open. Always and I've even been during the pandemic, I've been one other time, and it's pretty cool. They have like basically they just have like these like giant x-ray things. There's a guy standing like behind a thing pointing at you, and it's like predator. He's just like he's heat, like they're not taking your temperature, they're just [expletive] heat mapping you, and it's like awesome. I don't know. I dig it. I was surprised at actually how well, like, because they need like they can't close. There's no there's no remote Vegas.

38:47

Um, so that [expletive] had to stay open at like they weren't doing shows, but they were still doing gambling in restaurants. But I liked really how effective they were at incorporating all these safety measures, but still like keeping the uh the the operations going. And uh so that's where I'm going. Just need a little bit of a break. Um, not quite ready to take a vacation. I've had a friend who has had a Japan trip plan now for two years. Oh no. And they just have to keep pushing it back because Japan keeps like basically denying visitors or having all these like insane like rules. Not insane, like understandable, but they just have to keep canceling the trip. I'm not about that. I also don't have the money to keep delaying stuff.

38:47

Yeah, so we're just gonna go to Vegas and do that [expletive] until we're gonna go. Quickest flight in the world. Good. So it'll be up to you and you and Chris. Get yourself uh plan the next episode. Oh man, maybe Kim. Just five days. Uh be fine.

From 40:00

40:13

Maybe Kim can hop back in. Maybe yeah, because mom's gonna be here all week. Fill in. Yeah. But I got work stuff, so we gotta see what happens. Quit your job, Nate. Uh it's gonna happen.

40:21

This is it. Hopefully, uh, we don't know yet, but hopefully we will be at the Phoenix Comic-Con. Might be Phoenix Fan Fusion, technically. Uh, might be our big break if you're in the region or you're checking out that. Hey, we all miss cons, right? Like it's been a while. Those Renaissance, the This will be my first one. Yeah, it's gonna be a good time. So come out for sure. Like, if you've been like, hey, I'm not ready, I think you're ready. I think we're gonna be okay in January. And I think come out to the Phoenix Fan Fusion, come check us out, come check out the con. It's gonna be a good time.

40:49

It's time to live life, so let's do it together. What's the point of living if we're just in our house? Right. Listening to Nat One presents. Oh my god, it sounds awful. I'm ready to blow my brains out just thinking about it.

41:01

All right, Nate. It's been a pleasure. Uh, I will see everybody in a couple weeks. Awesome. Thanks for listening.

41:07

Thanks, everybody.
